Last week I shot a commercial for AT&T that will be shown during the Olympics, August 8-24. Be sure and watch for me! I'll be the one watching the Olympics on TV in my hotel room. Without makeup. You know, when a movie star appears without makeup they call her brave and nominate her for Oscars. I'd love to take my camera onto the set, but it's a little awkward and besides, I'm supposed to be working. But I did get a few shots at the Universal backlot when I went for my wardrobe fitting.
I love the Universal backlot. My first movie job, back in 1989, was one line in "Death Becomes Her." I shot that on the Universal backlot. The lot hasn't lost its mystery and fun for me. I shot this photo from the window of a room in the Edith Head wardrobe building. On the ground, it looks like this:
I think the orange cones tell the Universal Tour tram drivers where to turn around. Why do I think that? Because just west, or left, of here, these facades back up against this:
Backlot, meet parking lot. Not to mention hills.
Just one more, because I like it. This is the back of the building you see in the lower right of the first two photos: |

I'll be on the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" Monday, May 12th in a cute scene with one of the show's stars, Alyson Hannigan (the one who gets to wear all the great outfits). The episode title is "Everything Must Go." It's about her outfits. Check it out! Britney Spears is in my episode--well, I'm in Britney's episode--should be fun. I love being on any and all of the studio lots in the Los Angeles area. Lately I've been taking my camera when I have an audition or a shoot. When I auditioned at 20th Century Fox Studios for "How I Met Your Mother," I took some shots of this mural from "The Seven Year Itch." As you approach, it seems big.
When you get right up to it, it seems REALLY big.

I had a callback for a commercial today. I waited for my turn in a room where a couple of hundred other people waited their turns. It's not as bad as it sounds. It was a busy day at the studio, and they were probably casting about ten commercials. Still, it can feel a little tense. |

Hollywood's writers are back to writing. Actors are back to auditioning and working. The crews are back at work as well. I auditioned for a project at Sony Studios, and snapped a couple of shots from an upper level of the parking lot. It was the end of the day. Crew member conversations I had overheard all seemed to be about just greeting each other and glad to be back.
I like this shot of the bike lot below the parking lot, just because.

The Writers Guild strike is over and Hollywood is getting back to work. A very good place to keep yourself updated on that story is the WGA website. During our three and a half months or so without TV and film work, I've been lucky to have had commercial voice-overs to keep food on the table. Here are a couple of shots from a recent recording session for Stater Bros. Markets at Bell Sound Studios in Hollywood. That's Aaron Mason at the controls (taken from inside the booth), and yours truly at the mic. Voice-over is great for a lot of reasons, not least of which is you don't have to dress up.
