Wilma Wednesday: Instagram
“Do you like your Instagram account?” I ask.
“I want more followers,” says Wilma. She follows me to the living room to do a little dusting.
“Don’t you like the followers you have already?” I forgot the dust cloth. I return to the kitchen. Wilma follows.
“I like them. I want more.”
I return to the living room with Wilma trotting at my heels. She sits on her pallet to watch me dust the mantel.
“It would be nice of you to follow back.”
Wilma gets up and follows me to the laundry room where I put the dust cloth in the basket.
“I can’t follow them. I don’t have time.”
“Time? All you have to do is touch the screen.”
“But when I go to the screen, you say ‘off.'”
“Not the window screen, Wilma. The computer screen.”
“I don’t like the pooter.”
We seem to have reached an impasse. I decide to take a bathroom break. Wilma follows me.
“Wilma, do you have to follow me everywhere?”
“Yes. You need me. I’m the only follower you have.”
It’s best to let her think so. Otherwise I’ll have to explain the difference between the internet and meatspace, and that’s another subject altogether.
