Wilma Wednesday: Musick has Charms to Soothe a Savage Breast
John and Wilma roll on the floor, having a love fest. John tickles Wilma’s tummy. Wilma wriggles and play-bites. She wants to fight, for fun, as dogs do. We’ve gotten her too riled up.
To calm her, John begins singing, while petting her head. In his warm, rich voice, he improvises new lyrics to an old tune.
“I wonder who’s petting her now? I wonder who’s singing bow wow…”
Wilma stops wriggling and sits up.
“I wonder who’s gazing into her eyes, being nice, feeeeeding mice…”
“What is that noise?” Wilma asks.
John stops. “It’s singing,” he says.
“It’s like talk, but it’s not talk.”
“It’s music,” says John.
“I like talking better,” says Wilma.
“Oh yeah?” says John. “I’ll bet you can’t sing. Let’s hear you.”
And now everyone in the house is howling.
