Language is a Jellyfish

“Language is a city, to the building of which every human being brought a stone; yet he is no more to be credited with the grand result than the acaleph which adds a cell to the coral reef which is the basis of the continent.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Wilma has made up some words, like “shimpee” for the sleepiness that comes from her anti-histamine, and “push-growler” for lawnmower. I haven’t made up any besides “Pasadenamanian” and “Pasadenish” (like Dane and Danish) for my fellow locals, and it remains to be seen whether those will stick to the lexicon.

Someone should get credit for “acaleph,” at the very least.

What words have you created?

I can’t say I’ve created any, though occasionally I adapt a word in a different way.

That’s an excellent use of our versatile language, I’d say.

You probably don’t want to know some of the words I’ve created. They usually come in moments of anguish or anger! 🙂

I’ll bet those are some of your most creative.
