Hollywood Insiders (Authors with On-the-Job Experience)
It’s awards season, and the Hollywood Insiders (Authors with On-the-Job Experience) are just in time! Come to the Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse Thursday, February 16th at 7pm, to meet authors who have worked behind the scenes.
Andra Clarke gets the Glancing at Glamor award, and she deserves it. Along with her late mother, Regina Denton-Drew, Andra researched and wrote Ciro’s: Nightclub of the Stars. Denton-Drew was a cigarette girl and staff photographer at the famous club (the Sunset Blvd. building is now home to the Comedy Store). Andra will share her mother’s rare photos of famous and infamous patrons of Ciro’s during it’s mid-20th-century heyday. Nobody else has these!
Accepting the award for Tongue Firmly Planted in Cheek, David Marder shares war stories from his years as a Teamster, helping movies happen. It Takes More Than a Donut to Make a Movie: The Adventures of a Hollywood Teamster, is full of stories, stars and silliness. And cars! Have you ever wondered how the movies get all their cool cars? David knows all about it.
Accepting the Anything You Can Do William Can Do Too award, William Dickerson will speak about writing, producing and directing independent films. His book, Detour Hollywood: How to Direct a Micro-Budget Film (or any film, for that matter) is the kindest and truest guide for the indie filmmaker I’ve ever seen. Does the process seem mysterious to you? How does a movie get made? Will has directed 9 indie films, produced 6 and written 7. He’s currently in post-production for his latest film, No Alternative, based on the novel of the same name written by (guess who?) William Dickerson.
I’ll be there, too, moderating the panel. We’ll talk about my book, Act As If: Stumbling Through Hollywood with Headshot in Hand. (The whole evening is a subtitle party!) Act As If is about what it’s like to be a journeyman actor in Hollywood who works, yet isn’t famous. Unless you’ve heard of me, then of course I’ve won an Oscar…
Actually, I don’t think I’m getting any awards. Instead I’ll be your Jimmy Kimmel.
There will be free donuts. How could there not be donuts?
Come. Buy a book and get it signed! Or just join the discussion. These events are always fun, packed with people who have a lot to share.
