Hollywood Insiders

Hollywood Insiders Flintridge

It’s a little early to be thinking about the Oscars, but I’m thinking about them, specifically about books that tell the Hollywood story from the inside.

To celebrate awards season, the Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse is hosting a “Hollywood Insider” panel on February 16th, ten days before the Oscars. The featured authors have worked inside the industry, under the radar.

I’ll moderate, and three other authors will join me:

Will Dickerson, the indie producer/writer/director, whose highly successful film, Detour, took the indie world by storm (or, I should say, by mudslide). Will is now in post-production on his film, No Alternative. His books are DETOUR: Hollywood: How To Direct a Microbudget Film (or any film, for that matter), and No Alternative, the novel on which the new film is based and a story close to Will’s heart.

David Marder will be there, too. David’s years of working as a Teamster took him deep into Hollywood’s underbelly, even when that underbelly was in Egypt or Mexico or Florida or just about anywhere. David’s book, It Takes More than a Donut to Make a Movie: The Adventures of a Hollywood Teamsteris story after story of the hard work, surprises, and real adventures of the Teamster life. I expect David will keep us laughing.

Inside old Hollywood there was Ciro’s, the famous restaurant where Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, and Marilyn Monroe went to relax and be themselves. The late Regina Denton-Drew was the official photographer at Ciro’s, and with her daughter, Andra Clarke, she created the book, Ciro’s: Nightclub of the Stars. Andra will be with us to share her mother’s photographs and more great stories.

For years I was one of those journeyman actors you see in support of the stars and in service of the story: the waiters, the secretaries, the cops, the judges, the lawyers, the moms, the you-name-its. I wrote about that and more in Act As If: Stumbling Through Hollywood with Headshot in Hand, and we’ll talk about that, too.

Meet the authors, ask questions, buy a book and get it signed. Mark your calendar and we’ll see you there!

Hi again. I’m not sure how to help you connect with L & L Photography. The URL for the blog is: http://www.landlfotos.weebly.com/blog. Maybe the full URL will help? Thanks so much for caring enough to keep up with me! 🙂

      Hi Lowell,
I think it’s something to do with the RSS settings but I don’t know if they’re yours or mine. It’s a beautiful blog! Wonderful photography.

If I was in town, I’d be there, Petrea. It sounds like a very entertaining evening and after all, you will be there!

I’ve met all the writers and I know it’s going to be fun. Fascinating, too. One of our authors, Andra Clarke, has Hollywood photos that are rarely seen.
