Wilma Wednesday 6: Helping
I haven’t watered the grass in about a year, and it’s weedy. Because of California’s drought, a better idea is to plant things that need less water than grass does. I’m starting small with an area beside the house, where I plan to kill the grass with cardboard and mulch. I’ve got a nice aloe vera to plant there, a gift from a friend.
“I will dig.” Wilma stands beside me, ready to help.
“Thank you,” I say.
“I will sniff the plant.”
“That’s nice of you,” I say.
“I will pee on it,” says Wilma.
“Wow,” I say, “that’s so generous of you.”
“You’re welcome,” she says, “I like helping.”
Then I feel kind of bad, because Wilma doesn’t get sarcasm. So when she pees on the cardboard I say, “Good girl,” wondering if my horticultural plan is doomed.
