The #Wilmadialogs: Adoption Anniversary Day
Wilma and I have daily discussions about life. I’ve posted some of them on Facebook with the hashtag, #Wilmadialogs. Here’s a discussion we had just the other day:
“Happy birthday, Wilma!” I say, as we share our first cuddle of the day.
“What’s ‘birthday?’” she asks.
“It’s the anniversary of the day we adopted you.”
“…You mean, you’re not my mommy?” Her dark brown eyes gaze up at me.
“Oh sweetie, no, I—”
“I’m kidding. We’re not even the same species, Monkey Lady.” She trots to her bowl and sits, knowing breakfast is next.
“Now that you’re six years old, you’re officially a senior dog.”
“I haven’t even been a grown-up yet.”
“But you’ve handled your responsibilities like an adult. You make a fine Director of Security.”
“Yes, Wilma. You menace the mailman. You scare the birds. You’ve practically destroyed the fence just to protect us from squirrels.”
“I deserve a promotion!”
“And a raise! A fresh bone every day!”
“A new squeaky toy?”
“We can swing that.” I dish kibble into her bowl. “Happy adoption anniversary, Wilma.”
“Thank you, Monkey Lady.” She finishes her meal in seconds and dashes out the door to begin the day’s work. “Get outta my yard!” I hear her bark. A squirrel chitters madly. Then Wilma runs down the driveway to the gate, barking to everyone who passes, “It’s good to be adopted! It’s good to be adopted! It’s good to be adopted!”
